The film was shot in the Parisian park of the Bois de Boulogne, in the surrounding area and in the Château de Guermantes in Seine-et-Marne and in Semur-en-Auxois ( Côte-d'Or department ). As opposed to the equally brilliant duel scenes performed by dancer Gene Kelly in the previous adaptationof Dumas' novel, the duels in this film seem to be more dangerous. Since Bernard Borderie had already made several Lemmy Caution films he was an expert on fighting scenes. Bernard Borderie and his crew demonstrated here the qualities that later contributed substantially to the success of his series of five period drama films about Anne and Serge Golon 's heroine, Angelica. The settings, costumes and props are very elaborate and give the impression of historical precision. The film, directed by Bernard Borderie on a screenplay by Jean Bernard-Luc and Bernard Borderie with the story of Alexandre Dumas (father) (author of the novel), was produced by Raymond Borderie for Films Borderie, Les Films Modernes and Fono Roma with the participation of Le Film d'Art and shot in France.
